OpenAI and Figma have introduced a new integration that connects OpenAI Codex directly to the Figma design platform. This partnership enables product builders to generate Figma designs from Codex and implement Figma designs back into code, creating a bidirectional workflow between implementation and visual exploration.

The integration allows users to start a project from a prompt, in code, or within a design file and move between these states without losing context. By connecting Codex to Figma, engineers can iterate visually without leaving their development flow, and designers can work closer to actual implementation without needing to be full-time coders.

The Role of the Figma MCP Server

The connection is powered by the Figma MCP Server, which utilizes the Model Context Protocol (MCP)—an open-source standard that allows AI agents to interface with external data sources, applications, and tools. This server connects Codex to Figma's design platform and specific tools such as Figma Make and FigJam.

This integration is part of a broader strategic partnership between the two companies. Previous collaborations include:
