OpenAI and PwC Collaboration for AI Agents in Finance

OpenAI and PwC Collaboration for AI Agents in Finance

OpenAI and PwC have announced a collaboration to integrate AI agents into the office of the CFO, enabling enterprises to automate core finance workflows, coordinate across systems, and surface risks and insights. This partnership aims to move finance operations from simple process efficiency to intelligent, decision-centric operations with strong governance and human oversight.

AI Agents for Core Finance Workflows

Finance teams can use AI agents to automate repeatable tasks and connect context across disparate systems. The collaboration focuses on building agents around the core operating rhythms of finance, including planning, forecasting, reporting, procurement, payments, treasury, tax, and the accounting close.

Specific applications of these agents include:

  • Monitoring payments and exceptions
  • Reviewing contracts or invoices against company policy
  • Updating forecasts based on changing business conditions
  • Preparing reporting materials
  • Surfacing risks prior to month-end or quarter-end close

To support these workflows, the partnership utilizes Codex to build and adapt tools like spend trackers and dashboards, while Workspace Agents, Skills, and Connectors ensure agents follow approved processes and maintain enterprise context.

OpenAI as "Customer Zero"

OpenAI's own finance organization serves as the primary production environment to validate enterprise-scale workflows, governance models, and human-agent collaboration patterns. This "customer zero" approach allows PwC and OpenAI to test and refine agentic workflows in a real-world setting before deploying them to other enterprises.

OpenAI has reported the following results from internal application of these tools:

  • Contract Processing: The use of Codex has enabled the finance team to process five times more contracts with the same team size.
  • Investor Relations: The team used "IR-GPT" to manage over 200 investor interactions during a recent fundraise.

Implementation and Governance

PwC provides the finance transformation, controls, and implementation expertise necessary to move AI agents from prototype to production. A key component of the scale-up process is providing CFOs with visibility into AI usage, token consumption, and projected spend, allowing finance teams to govern AI adoption as they would any other enterprise operating cost.

"Finance is at an inflection point, where organizations are moving from process efficiency to intelligent, decision-centric operations. Through our collaboration with OpenAI, we’ll helping clients embed agentic AI into the core fabric of the finance function, enabling more proactive insights, stronger controls, and a more adaptive operating model."
