xAI API Public Beta Release

xAI has launched a public beta of its API, providing developers programmatic access to the Grok series of foundation models. This allows developers to integrate Grok's capabilities into their own applications through a REST API that is fully compatible with OpenAI and Anthropic's API structures to simplify migration.

Grok-beta Model Capabilities

The public beta begins with a preview of a new model, provisionally named grok-beta. This model is in the final stages of development and features a context length of 128,000 tokens. It supports both system prompts and function calling, allowing for more controlled and precise programmatic interactions.

Multi-modal Support

xAI announced that a multi-modal version of the grok-beta model capable of image ingestion is scheduled for release next week.

API Integration and Migration

The xAI REST API is designed for full compatibility with the APIs offered by OpenAI and Anthropic. This compatibility allows developers to migrate existing implementations to Grok by updating the base_url to https://api.x.ai/v1 and providing an xAI API key generated via console.x.ai. For example, developers using the OpenAI Python SDK can switch to Grok with minimal code changes.

Beta Program Incentives

xAI is running a public beta program through the end of the year, offering $25 of free API credits per month to all users to encourage testing and development.

Users who previously purchased prepaid credits will receive an equivalent amount of additional free monthly credits through December. For instance, a user who previously purchased $50 in prepaid credits will receive $25 (the base free credit) plus $50 in additional free credits for November and December.
