Anthropic has appointed Mariano-Florentino (Tino) Cuéllar as its first Chief Global Affairs Officer. Tino Cuéllar will lead Anthropic's efforts in policy and strategic international engagement. His role is designed to navigate the complex intersection of AI development and government relations worldwide, ensuring that the trajectory of AI is shaped by democratic societies and that its benefits are distributed broadly.

Professional Background and Expertise

Cuéllar brings a multidisciplinary background spanning law, technology, international security, and public institutions. His previous leadership roles include:

• Policy and Research: Former President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a global policy research institution with scholars in 20 countries.
• Judiciary: Former Justice of the Supreme Court of California, where he authored opinions on technology, privacy, international agreements, and the separation of powers.
• Academia: Cameron Schrier Family Professor at Stanford Law School and Senior Fellow at Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. He previously directed Stanford's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, the Center for International Security and Cooperation, and the Stanford Cyber Initiative.
• Government Service: Former member of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board and the US Department of State's Foreign Affairs Policy Board, with experience serving in three presidential administrations.
• AI Governance: Co-leader of California’s Frontier AI Working Group and a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Responsible Computing Research.

Transition from the Long-Term Benefit Trust

Since January 2026, Tino Cuéllar had served as a Trustee of Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust. To join the company in a full-time executive capacity, he has stepped down from the Trust, which will select a successor through its standard process.
