OpenAI Investment in Merge Labs

OpenAI has invested in Merge Labs as part of its seed round to accelerate the development of high-bandwidth brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). This investment aims to create a more direct, human-centered way for individuals to interact with AI by bridging biological and artificial intelligence.

High-Bandwidth Brain-Computer Interfaces

Merge Labs is developing new approaches to BCIs that combine biology, devices, and AI to enable safer, higher-bandwidth interfaces between the brain and technology. The goal is to maximize human ability, agency, and experience by creating a seamless interaction layer between humans and AI.

The Role of AI in BCI Development

Artificial intelligence is central to the Merge Labs approach in two primary ways:

  1. Research and Development Acceleration: AI will be used to speed up progress in bioengineering, neuroscience, and device engineering.
  2. Intent Interpretation: High-bandwidth interfaces require AI operating systems capable of interpreting human intent, adapting to individual users, and operating reliably despite limited or noisy signals.

OpenAI will collaborate with Merge Labs on the development of scientific foundation models and other frontier tools to facilitate this progress.

Merge Labs Leadership and Founding Team

Merge Labs was founded by a team of researchers and entrepreneurs, including researchers Mikhail Shapiro, Tyson Aflalo, and Sumner Norman, who have pioneered new BCI approaches. The founding team is also supported by technology entrepreneurs Alex Blania, Sandro Herbig, and Sam Altman (investing in a personal capacity).
