OpenAI and Digital Green Launch Farmer.Chat for Agricultural Extension
Digital Green has partnered with OpenAI to develop Farmer.Chat, a generative AI-powered chatbot designed to provide farmers in India and Kenya with instant, locally-tailored agricultural advice. This tool addresses the critical shortage of agricultural extension agents by reducing the cost of advisory services from $35 per farmer to $0.35 per farmer—a 100x reduction in cost.
Scaling Agricultural Extension with Generative AI
Farmer.Chat leverages a database of locally-derived agricultural best practices, built from nearly 8,000 farmer-to-farmer training videos created by Digital Green over the past 15 years. This allows the AI to provide context-aware guidance based on success stories and practices that have already proven effective within specific regions.
In rural and remote communities, the agent-to-farmer ratio is often prohibitively high; for example, India's network of 400,000 agents serves farmers at a ratio of 1:650. Farmer.Chat scales the reach of these services by providing a tool that is accessible in multiple languages, including Hindi and Swahili, as well as various regional dialects, through an agile tech stack that integrates with local translation datasets.
Impact on Extension Agents and Farmers
Farmer.Chat serves as both a direct resource for farmers and a self-teaching tool for extension workers. By providing real-time solutions, the tool enables agents to address more farmer concerns in a single day than was previously possible.
"The chatbot is very informative and user-friendly. It enhances my knowledge and builds my confidence by helping me provide real-time solutions to support more farmers’ concerns in a single day than I could before," said Raju Kumar, an extension worker with the Government of Bihar’s Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society.
As of January 1, 2024, more than 4,500 extension agents are utilizing Farmer.Chat across Kenya and India, with further expansion planned across twelve states in India.
Technical Evolution and Future Roadmap
Digital Green has iterated on Farmer.Chat using a progression of OpenAI technologies, including GPT-4, GPTs in ChatGPT, and the Assistants API. The current focus is on expanding the tool's accessibility by integrating Farmer.Chat into common messaging interfaces like WhatsApp and Telegram via the Assistants API.
To further improve the system, Digital Green is testing the following enhancements:
- Agri-LLM Fine-Tuning: Testing the impact of a specialized "Agri-LLM" to better handle agricultural nuances and enable direct interaction in local dialects without requiring translation to English.
- Data Trusts: Implementing a data trust model to ensure farmers maintain oversight and control over the management and use of their agricultural data.
- Multimodal Capabilities: Utilizing multimodal prompts to provide more context-aware and versatile guidance for agricultural ecosystems.
