OpenAI Acquires Software Applications Incorporated to Integrate Sky into ChatGPT

OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the creators of the Sky natural language interface for macOS. This acquisition allows OpenAI to move beyond prompt-based responses and integrate AI directly into the macOS ecosystem to enable AI that can understand screen context and take action within applications.

Deep macOS Integration and Action-Oriented AI

OpenAI is integrating Sky's capabilities into ChatGPT to transition the AI from a chatbot to an agentic interface. Sky is a natural language interface that floats over the desktop, allowing the AI to understand what is currently on the user's screen and execute actions using existing Mac applications.

According to Nick Turley, VP & Head of ChatGPT, the acquisition is intended to accelerate the vision of "bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day" so that ChatGPT can help users "get things done" rather than simply responding to prompts.

Vision for the AI Interface

Software Applications Incorporated founders envisioned computers to be more intuitive and intuitive. Ari Weinstein, Co-Founder and CEO of Software Applications Incorporated, stated that Large Language Models (LLMs) provide the necessary technology to realize a vision of an AI experience that helps users think and create by floating over their desktop.

Acquisition Details and Governance

The acquisition of Software Applications Incorporated was led by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo. It was approved by the independent Transaction and Audit Committees of OpenAI's board of directors.

As part of the deal, all members of the Software Applications Incorporated team will join OpenAI.

The company disclosed that an investment fund associated with Sam Altman held a passive investment in Software Applications Incorporated prior to the acquisition.
