Hugging Face Selected for CNIL Enhanced Support Program

Hugging Face has been selected by the the French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) to participate in its Enhanced Support program. This initiative aims to help companies with strong economic development potential better understand and implement their data protection duties, specifically within the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.

CNIL Enhanced Support Program Objectives

The CNIL Enhanced Support program is designed to provide specialized guidance to companies to ensure they meet their legal obligations regarding data protection. Hugging Face was one of only three companies selected from a pool of over 40 candidates for this program.

Integration with Hugging Face Privacy Initiatives

Hugging Face has integrated privacy considerations into its large-scale AI projects through several key initiatives:

  • BigScience Workshop: This project served as the first Large Language Model (LLM) training effort to prioritize privacy through a multi-pronged approach involving data processing, data selection, governance, and model sharing.
  • BigCode Project: Co-hosted with ServiceNow, this project focused on addressing privacy risks and developed new tools for pseudonymization to support broader AI development.

These technical efforts allow Hugging Face to determine what is technically feasible at different stages of the AI development process, which in turn helps the organization address legal requirements and risks associated with personal data.

Impact on GDPR Compliance and AI Development

Collaborating with the CNIL will allow Hugging Face to leverage the expertise of France's Data Protection Agency to push GDPR compliance forward. The goal of this partnership is to provide greater clarity for the Hugging Face user community regarding privacy and data protection while continuing to develop machine learning technology that respects individual data rights.
