OpenAI introduces Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex

OpenAI has introduced the Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex, enabling administrators to analyze workspace data and execute management actions within a single conversation. This tool integrates administrative analytics and authorized actions to reduce the need for switching between separate settings menus and reporting tools.

Conversational Workspace Management

The Admin plugin allows administrators to perform routine management tasks directly through the ChatGPT Work and Codex interfaces. The plugin supports the following core capabilities:

Usage and Adoption Tracking: Admins can review activity and credit usage across both platforms to identify enablement needs or members approaching credit limits.
Member and Group Administration: The tool facilitates adding or removing members, updating groups, and managing onboarding and offboarding processes.
Access and Permission Control: Admins can diagnose access issues, review effective permissions, and control model or feature access based on roles or groups.
Budget and Limit Management: The plugin enables the adjustment of usage limits for workspaces, groups, and members, as well as the contextual review and approval of spending requests.

Automation of Administrative Workflows

The plugin enables the automation of recurring checks and high-volume requests without requiring custom engineering. These automations ensure policies are applied consistently and reduce manual monitoring.

Supported automation examples include:

External Routing: Routing pending usage requests to Slack or Microsoft Teams for authorized reviewer approval.
Conditional Access: Automatically granting feature access when requests meet predefined criteria, while routing exceptions for manual review.

Each automated workflow includes a confirmation step to notify the admin when requested changes have been applied.

Security and Permission Framework

The Admin plugin operates within the existing role and permission framework of the user; it does not grant elevated access. The plugin maps natural language instructions to supported read or write actions and returns structured results, effectively making Admin Console capabilities available as permission-aware tools.

To maintain oversight, the system provides transparency for every change, allowing admins to see the specific request, the completion status, and the resulting change. Actions with broader impact require review before they are applied.

OpenAI's own IT team utilizes the Admin plugin and broader ChatGPT Work integrations to streamline operations. Kunal Malik, Head of Global IT at OpenAI, states:

Operational Dashboards: Support ticket data is converted into operational health dashboards, allowing the team to move from reactive service management to proactive planning, even as support volume doubled.

Installation

To use the Admin plugin, administrators must first enable it in the ChatGPT workspace settings and then install it from the Plugins directory within the web or desktop application of ChatGPT Work.
