SearchGPT aims to reduce the effort required to find information on the web by combining conversational AI with live data. The system provides direct, timely responses to user queries and supports follow-up questions, allowing the shared context of the conversation to build over multiple queries.
To ensure transparency and verifiability, SearchGPT provides clear links to relevant sources. These sources are presented through in-line, named attribution and a dedicated sidebar containing source links, allowing users to quickly navigate to the original content.
Publisher Partnerships and Content Control
OpenAI is positioning SearchGPT as a tool to help users discover high-quality content from publishers and creators. The prototype includes specific mechanisms to protect and value journalism and publishing:
- Attribution: The interface highlights high-quality content with prominent citations and links.
- Publisher Controls: OpenAI has introduced a method for publishers to manage how their content appears within SearchGPT.
- Separation from Training: SearchGPT is a search function and is distinct from the training of OpenAI's generative AI foundation models. Websites can be surfaced in search results even if the owners have opted out of generative AI training.
