Mistral AI le Chat Updates November 2024

Mistral AI has updated le Chat, its free generative AI work assistant, with a suite of beta features designed to transform it from a simple chatbot into a comprehensive productivity tool. These updates include integrated web search, a collaborative ideation space called Canvas, and advanced multimodal understanding powered by the Pixtral Large model.

Integrated Web Search and Citations

Le Chat now includes web search capabilities to augment the training knowledge of its language models. This feature allows students and professionals to perform research and learning tasks by accessing the latest information and current events from the internet, providing citations for the retrieved data to ensure grounding and verifiability.

Canvas for Collaborative Ideation

Canvas is a new interface that enables users to move beyond bidirectional conversations into a shared workspace for 0-1 creation. Unlike standard chat interfaces, Canvas allows users to:

  • Directly Modify Content: Users can edit, transform, or modify content in place without needing to regenerate entire responses.

  • Version Control: The interface supports versioning of drafts.

  • Design Previews: Users can preview designs, such as React mockups for dashboards, directly within the workspace.

Canvas is intended for the creation of documents, presentations, code, and mockups, facilitating a more iterative and collaborative workflow between the human user and the LLM.

Multimodal Capabilities and Image Generation

Le Chat's capabilities for processing visual and textual data have been expanded through two primary integrations:

Document and Image Understanding

Powered by the new Pixtral Large multimodal model (and an experimental model), le Chat can now process large, complex PDF documents and images. This includes the ability to analyze and summarize graphs, tables, diagrams, formulae, and equations within a document.

Image Generation

Mistral AI has partnered with Black Forest Labs to integrate Flux Pro, allowing users to generate high-quality images directly within the le Chat interface.

Task Agents for Workflow Automation

Users can now codify repetitive creative patterns or reused prompts into agents. These agents can be published and shared with teammates to automate specific workflows, such as:

  • Scanning receipts for expense reporting.
  • Creating summaries (TL;DRs) of long meeting minutes.
    • Processing invoices.

Competitive Positioning and Pricing

Mistral AI positions le Chat as a fully integrated platform that provides frontier model access, web search, and task agents within a single offering. According to Mistral AI, several of these features—such as task agents and the Canvas interface—are available for free in beta, whereas similar features in competing assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity may be restricted to paid tiers or are unavailable.

Currently, all new features are introduced as free beta offerings. Mistral AI states that it is working toward premium tiers with higher service guarantees while maintaining a generous free tier.
