VT Code is an open-source Rust terminal coding agent.

What it is. VT Code is a command-line AI coding agent (written in Rust) that you run inside your own terminal. It helps you explore a codebase, plan changes, run tools, and review edits — either interactively (a full-screen text UI) or headlessly via commands like vtcode exec "refactor main.rs".

How you use it. Install it, run vtcode init in a project (it scaffolds a config file and an AGENTS.md), add API credentials for your chosen model provider (e.g. OpenAI), then ask for something like "Explain how this project handles authentication." You pick the model and the permissions; the tool handles context, tool calls, and what commands are allowed to run.

Key ideas.

  • Plan-then-review workflow: do read-only planning first, then review the diff before committing.
  • Safety: commands run under an auditable policy and sandboxing; you control what it may execute.
  • Self-correction loop: the agent uses a "HOVER" loop — Hypothesize, Observe tool evidence, Verify, Evaluate, Revise — to retry failed steps with corrected arguments.
  • Long-running automation: headless mode supports resume/compaction, scheduled tasks (cron-style prompts like a weekly dependency audit), and an eval framework for repeatable tests.
  • Integrations: MCP (external tools/data), Agent Skills (prompt packages), plugins, a bridge to the Zed editor, and a Memcode MCP for carrying context between tasks.

Tech. Rust 1.98+, built as a 23-crate workspace. Installable via a script, Homebrew, or Cargo. Sessions can be resumed (vtcode continue) and execution logs inspected (vtcode trajectory).

Good for: developers who want an AI coding assistant that stays in the terminal, gives them explicit control over permissions, and can run unattended or on a schedule.
