An open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Microsoft Word in pure Rust
What it solves
WordCraft is an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Microsoft Word. It provides a fast, private, and cross-platform word processor that maintains the familiar ribbon-based workflow and .docx compatibility without relying on proprietary software.
How it works
Built entirely in Rust, the application uses a layered architecture to handle everything from geometric measurements and document modeling to pagination and rendering. It utilizes the egui library for GPU-accelerated native rendering across macOS, Windows, Linux, BSD, and the web (via WebAssembly). To enable AI integration, every user action is mapped to a specific command ID, allowing the software to be driven by a command-line tool, a JSON control channel, or an MCP server.
Who it’s for
It is designed for writers and document designers who want a professional word processor that is open-source, fast, and compatible with standard document formats like .docx, .odt, and PDF.
Highlights
- High Compatibility: Reads and writes .docx (OOXML) and supports various other formats including .odt, .rtf, .html, .md, and .txt.
- Agent-Ready: Specifically designed to be driven by AI agents via an MCP server and CLI, allowing agents to execute commands, inspect documents, and render pages.
- Performance: Features cached paragraph layout for extremely fast typing and on-demand page rendering.
- Comprehensive Feature Set: Includes advanced word processing tools such as track changes, mail merge, citations (APA, MLA, Chicago, IEEE), and complex page layouts (drop caps, text wrapping).
- Privacy: All spelling and grammar checks operate offline.
