An open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Avid Pro Tools in pure Rust
What it solves
SoundCraft is an open-source digital audio workstation (DAW) designed as a clean-room reimplementation of the Avid Pro Tools workflow. It provides a professional-grade environment for recording, editing, and mixing audio across multiple platforms, including the browser, without relying on proprietary software.
How it works
Built entirely in Rust, the project uses a layered architecture where the core engine is decoupled from the UI (implemented with egui). It features a parallel mix engine and a command-based system where every action—from adjusting faders to adding plugins—is mapped to a unique ID and JSON parameters. This design allows the software to be controlled not only via the GUI but also through a command-line interface (CLI), a JSON control channel, and an MCP server, making it fully scriptable and accessible to AI agents.
Who it’s for
It is designed for audio engineers and musicians who are familiar with professional DAW workflows, as well as developers and AI researchers looking for a programmatically controllable audio production environment.
Highlights
- Comprehensive DAW Toolset: Includes multitrack editing, a full mixer with automation, MIDI piano-roll editing, and a score editor with MusicXML export.
- Agent-Ready Architecture: Full MCP server support and a CLI that allow AI agents (like Claude) to drive the DAW headlessly or in real-time.
- Cross-Platform Native: Runs natively on macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and in the browser via WebAssembly.
- Advanced Audio Routing: Supports surround and immersive audio formats from stereo up to 9.1.6 and Ambisonics, including object/bed routing.
- Extensive Plugin Support: Compatible with CLAP, VST3, and Audio Units, alongside a suite of original built-in DSP plugins.
