skills/getting-started-with-github-copilot

Learn, build, debug, and ship faster than ever with your favorite AI pair programmer.

What is it?

A ~45-minute interactive exercise that teaches you how to use GitHub Copilot, GitHub's AI programming helper. You complete the whole thing inside your browser—no setup or local files needed.

Who is it for?

Anyone who writes code, at any experience level. You should already be comfortable with: basic coding concepts, the VS Code editor (or similar), and the GitHub basics exercise recommended in the course.

What you'll actually do

  1. Click one button to copy the exercise template to your GitHub account. Wait about 20 seconds, then refresh. Your browser opens a preconfigured workspace (called a Codespace) with VS Code running inside it.
  2. Use Copilot in different modes: ask it to explain code, write new code, plan a feature, and develop it.
  3. Practice reviewing a pull request (a proposed code change) with Copilot summarizing what changed.

The concrete project

You'll use Copilot to update the extracurricular activities website for a fictional school called Mergington High School.

Before you start

  • Complete the free exercise: Introduction to GitHub
  • Be familiar with VS Code (the exercise runs it in your browser)
  • Know basic coding principles

How to get help

If the exercise doesn't load after ~20 seconds, the README says to check the Actions tab in your new repository, or file an issue if it failed.

All details above come directly from the project's README. No extra features or promises are implied.
