simpler-env/SimplerEnv
Evaluating and reproducing real-world robot manipulation policies (e.g., RT-1, RT-1-X, Octo) in simulation under common setups (e.g., Google Robot, WidowX+Bridge) (CoRL 2024)
What it solves
Real-world evaluation of generalist robot manipulation policies is expensive, inefficient, and difficult to reproduce. SimplerEnv provides a scalable, simulated alternative that allows researchers to quantitatively evaluate policies, select checkpoints, and identify failure modes without needing constant access to physical hardware.
How it works
Built on the SAPIEN simulator and ManiSkill2 (with ManiSkill3 support for GPU acceleration), the project implements two primary real-to-sim evaluation strategies:
- Visual Matching: Overlays real-world images onto simulation backgrounds and adjusts robot and object textures to match real-world appearances.
- Variant Aggregation: Averages results across multiple simulated environment variations, including different lighting, backgrounds, distractors, and table textures.
Who it’s for
Robotics researchers and developers building generalist manipulation policies (such as RT-1 or Octo) who need a standardized, reproducible way to test their models before or alongside real-world deployment.
Highlights
- Prepackaged Environments: Includes a variety of tasks for Google Robot and WidowX, such as picking coke cans, opening drawers, and stacking cubes.
- Policy Integration: Provides built-in support and inference scripts for RT-1 and Octo policies.
- Performance Metrics: Includes tools to calculate Mean Maximum Rank Violation (MMRV) and Pearson Correlation to measure how well simulation results correlate with real-world performance.
- Extensibility: Offers guides and tools for adding new robots, policies, and evaluation environments.
