Closed Captioning OBS plugin using Google Speech Recognition

What it solves

This plugin allows streamers to provide real-time closed captioning for their audiences without needing external tools or browser extensions. It specifically targets Twitch users, enabling captions that are optional for viewers and persist in VODs across PC, Android, and iOS devices.

How it works

The plugin integrates directly into OBS and uses the Google Cloud Speech Recognition API to convert audio from a selected microphone source into text. It sends these captions to Twitch's native captioning system. To ensure privacy and safety, it only generates captions when the selected audio source is unmuted and active in the current scene.

Who it’s for

Live streamers, particularly those on Twitch, who want to make their content more accessible to the deaf or hard-of-hearing community without adding complexity to their viewer's experience.

Highlights

  • Native Integration: Works with Twitch's built-in caption support, meaning no extensions are required for viewers.
  • Flexible Output: Supports both closed captions (via Twitch) and open captions (via OBS Text Sources) for platforms that don't support native CC.
  • Transcript Export: Can save full stream or recording transcripts as .srt subtitle files or plain text.
  • Customization: Includes text filtering to remove or replace specific words and phrases.
  • Audio Versatility: Can caption specific audio sources or entire OBS audio tracks.
