Fast, Accurate, Lightweight Python library to make State of the Art Embedding
FastEmbed — Fast, Lightweight Embedding Generation
What it is
FastEmbed is a Python library that turns text, images, and documents into embeddings — long lists of numbers that capture the meaning of the input. These embeddings are the building blocks for semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and recommendation systems.
The core idea
Most embedding libraries are heavy: they require a GPU, download gigabytes of PyTorch dependencies, and run slowly. FastEmbed takes a different approach:
- Uses ONNX Runtime instead of PyTorch — a leaner, faster execution engine
- No GPU required — runs on ordinary CPUs, making it suitable for serverless environments like AWS Lambda
- Few dependencies — lightweight installation
- Data parallelism — can process large datasets faster by splitting work across cores
What it can do
FastEmbed supports several kinds of models:
| Type | Purpose | Example model |
|---|---|---|
| Dense text embeddings | Standard semantic search — each text becomes one vector | BAAI/bge-small-en-v1.5 (384 dimensions) |
| Sparse text embeddings | Keyword-style matching that highlights important words | SPLADE++ |
| Late interaction (ColBERT) | Fine-grained token-level matching for higher accuracy | colbert-ir/colbertv2.0 |
| Image embeddings | Turn images into vectors | CLIP vision model |
| Multimodal late interaction (ColPali) | Match images and text together — e.g., searching inside PDF screenshots | Qdrant/colpali-v1.3-fp16 |
| Rerankers | Score how relevant a document is to a query, to reorder search results | Xenova/ms-marco-MiniLM-L-6-v2 |
Why it matters
Embeddings are the foundation of modern AI search. FastEmbed makes generating them fast and cheap enough to run anywhere — including serverless functions — and it integrates directly with Qdrant, a vector database, so you can store embeddings and search them at scale.
Key details
- Default model: Flag Embedding (BAAI/bge-small-en-v1.5), which performs well on the MTEB benchmark
- Claimed accuracy: Better than OpenAI's Ada-002 embedding model
- Custom models: You can add your own ONNX models, not just the pre-supported list
- GPU support: Optional
fastembed-gpupackage for CUDA acceleration - Simple API: A few lines of Python to embed documents, images, or rerank results
Example usage (text)
from fastembed import TextEmbedding
documents = ["This is a document about AI.", "Another document about search."]
model = TextEmbedding() # downloads the default model on first use
embeddings = list(model.embed(documents)) # each is a 384-dimension vector
Bottom line
FastEmbed is a practical tool for anyone building semantic search, RAG pipelines, or vector-based AI applications — it makes embedding generation fast, lightweight, and accessible without specialized hardware.
