Open Data Platform for analysts, quants and AI agents.

Open Data Platform (ODP) by OpenBB

What it is

OpenBB ODP is an open‑source Python library that lets you pull together many financial data sources – proprietary, licensed or public – and expose them through a single, consistent interface. It acts as a data‑integration layer that can be consumed by:

  • Python scripts and notebooks (for quants and data scientists)
  • The commercial OpenBB Workspace UI (Excel‑like analyst dashboards)
  • AI‑agent back‑ends (MCP servers) and other applications via a FastAPI REST service.

Why it matters

Financial analysts spend a lot of time writing glue code to fetch price, fundamentals, macro, or alternative data from dozens of providers. ODP’s “connect once, consume everywhere” approach centralises those connections, normalises the output, and makes the data instantly available to downstream tools – including LLM‑powered research assistants.

Key features (as described in the README)

Feature What you get
Unified data access One Python package (openbb) with a high‑level API, e.g. obb.equity.price.historical("AAPL") returns a dataframe.
FastAPI backend openbb-api spins up a local server (127.0.0.1:6900) exposing the same data via HTTP/JSON.
CLI openbb-cli provides command‑line access to the same functions.
Enterprise UI integration The backend can be linked to the paid OpenBB Workspace product, letting analysts browse data and attach AI agents.
Extensible data catalog Docs list all supported integrations; additional providers can be added via the backends-for-openbb repo.
Open‑source & pip‑installable Install with pip install openbb (or openbb-cli).

How to get started (quick‑start)

pip install openbb # install the library
pip install openbb-cli # optional CLI
openbb-api # launch the FastAPI server on localhost

In Python:

from openbb import obb
out = obb.equity.price.historical("AAPL")
df = out.to_dataframe()

The server can be tested by opening http://127.0.0.1:6900 in a browser.

Who should use it

  • Quant developers who need a reliable, version‑controlled way to fetch market data.
  • Data engineers building pipelines that feed AI agents or dashboards.
  • Analysts working in OpenBB Workspace who want their custom data sources available.
  • Researchers experimenting with LLM‑driven finance assistants, as the platform supplies the data layer.

License & disclaimer

The code is released under the Apache 2.0 license. The README includes a standard financial‑risk disclaimer: the data may be inaccurate and OpenBB is not liable for trading losses.
