OMSI 2 recreated from scratch in Rust, compatible with every map and mod (requires the original OMSI 2)

openOMSI – a modern, open‑source re‑implementation of the OMSI 2 bus simulator

What it is

  • A from‑scratch recreation of the commercial bus‑driving simulator OMSI 2, written in Rust.
  • It does not ship any game assets; you must own a legal copy of OMSI 2 and point the launcher at that installation.
  • The engine runs on modern graphics APIs (Vulkan, Metal, DirectX 12 via wgpu) and supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and a head‑less dedicated‑server mode.

Key capabilities

  • Full compatibility – all original map, vehicle, scenery, script and mod formats are supported, so existing OMSI 2 content works unchanged.
  • 64‑bit, multithreaded engine – removes the 2 GB memory limit of the original, streams assets, and runs physics/AI on worker threads.
  • Multiplayer – LAN play and a dedicated server binary let multiple players share a session.
  • Modding extensions – Lua and WebAssembly plugins, higher‑resolution textures, extra interior lights, and a plugin workbench.
  • Cross‑platform builds – pre‑compiled releases for x64/ARM64 Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, plus scripts to build from source.

Typical workflow

  1. Install OMSI 2 (Steam or retail) – the original maps and buses are required.
  2. Download the appropriate openOMSI release and unpack it.
  3. Run the launcher (openomsi.exe, openOMSI.app, etc.). The launcher auto‑detects the OMSI 2 folder or you can set it manually.
  4. Choose a map, bus and duty, then start driving. Mods are added via the Mods page or by dropping files into the adjacent Mods folder.
  5. For multiplayer, one player hosts (or runs the dedicated server) and others join the LAN session; all participants need the same map files.

Who might use it

  • Bus‑simulation enthusiasts who want a modern, actively maintained engine while keeping their existing OMSI 2 content.
  • Mod developers looking for a more flexible engine (larger textures, extra lighting, plugin support) without rewriting assets.
  • Developers/learners interested in a sizable Rust codebase that covers rendering (wgpu), scripting, networking, and plugin architectures.

Where to learn more

  • Full documentation site: https://openomsi.org/ (mirrored in the docs/ folder).
  • User guide, VR setup, Android instructions, and plugin API docs are all in the repository.
  • Community chat on Discord (link in the README) and issue tracker for bug reports.

Status

  • Early release (v0.x) – functional but may contain bugs; the launcher can auto‑update to newer builds.
  • Actively built via GitHub Actions; source code is under the permissive MIT license.
