ThunderAI – AI‑powered assistant for Thunderbird

What it is – ThunderAI is a Thunderbird add‑on that lets you call large‑language‑model services (ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, OpenAI API, Ollama, or any OpenAI‑compatible server) directly from your mailbox. It can draft replies, proofread, rewrite, translate, summarize, tag, classify, and even turn email content into calendar events or tasks, all without leaving Thunderbird.

How it works – After a one‑click Setup Wizard you choose an AI provider (cloud or local). The add‑on sends the selected email text (or the whole message) to the model via the chosen API and displays the result in a chat‑style pane or inline. Custom prompts can be created, exported, imported, and enriched with user‑defined placeholders ({%placeholder%}), letting you tailor the behaviour for your workflow.

Key features

• Email actions – Reply, proofread (interactive change picker), rewrite tone, summarize, translate, auto‑tag, classify, extract calendar events or tasks, free‑form “Prompt this”.
• Automatic processing – Auto‑tagging, spam filtering, auto‑summarize and auto‑translate run on incoming mail (drafts are ignored).
• Customization – Custom prompts with validation, custom data placeholders, drag‑and‑drop menu ordering, per‑prompt provider/model selection, batch processing, shortcut Ctrl+Alt+A, multilingual UI.
• Integrations – Supports ChatGPT Web (no key), OpenAI API, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, Ollama (local), and any OpenAI‑compatible server (DeepSeek, Grok, Mistral, OpenRouter, Perplexity, etc.).
• Companion add‑on – “ThunderAI Sparks” adds the calendar‑event and task extraction actions.

Installation & setup

1. Install from the Thunderbird Add‑ons site or download the latest release from GitHub.
2. Requires Thunderbird ≥ 140.0.
3. On first run the wizard guides you through selecting an AI provider, testing the connection and enabling automatic features.

Development & contribution

• The add‑on is plain JavaScript; no build step is required for the shipped XPI.
• Tests are written with Node’s built‑in test runner; jsdom is the only dev dependency.
• Contributions follow the guidelines in CONTRIBUTING.md; translations are managed on Weblate.
