MCP Router — development, support and security updates ended 2026-09-18. Historical source and final release for existing users.

📦 Project Summary

MCP Router is a cross‑platform desktop application (Windows & macOS) that lets you organise, start/stop and monitor Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers. It treats each server as a “project” that can be grouped into workspaces, lets you toggle individual tools on a per‑server basis, and shows request logs and basic analytics. All configuration and credential data stay on the local machine – there is no cloud component any more.

✨ Core Capabilities

Capability What it does
Universal server connectivity Connect to any MCP server – remote or local – using DXT, JSON or a manual configuration.
Project & workspace organisation Group servers into Projects and isolate settings with Workspaces (similar to browser profiles).
Tool toggling Enable or disable individual MCP tools per server with a single click.
Local‑only data handling Request logs, API keys and server configs are stored only on the user’s device; the code is open‑source for verification.
Built‑in logging & analytics Real‑time view of request counts, latency and other basic metrics for each server.
One‑click integration Quick linking to popular AI front‑ends such as Claude, Cline, Windsurf, Cursor, or any custom client via a generated token.

🛠️ Getting Started

  1. Download the latest installer from the Releases page.
  2. Run the installer – it places a desktop app that stores all data in a local folder.
  3. (Optional) Install the companion CLI:
export MCPR_TOKEN="mcpr_your_token" # token shown when you add a custom app
npx -y @mcp_router/cli connect # connects the CLI to the running desktop app
    npx -y @mcp_router/cli connect --project <project-name>

  4. Open the app, add a server (remote URL or local address), assign it to a project/workspace, and start toggling tools.

📊 What You’ll See

  • Server list with on/off switches.
  • Tool list per server where each tool can be toggled.
  • Project/Workspace panels for organising multiple servers.
  • Log/Stats view showing request counts and simple performance numbers.

⚠️ Project Status

  • End‑of‑support: September 18 2026. No further development, security patches, or cloud services. The final desktop version is v0.6.4.
  • Migration: A guide is provided in docs/END_OF_SUPPORT.md for users who need to move to an alternative solution.
  • Community: Still active on Discord and X, but the maintainers recommend against new adoptions.

👥 Who Might Find This Useful?

  • Teams that run their own MCP‑compatible inference servers and want a lightweight UI to keep them organised.
  • Developers building custom AI assistants that rely on the Model Context Protocol and need a local way to switch tools on/off.
  • Anyone looking for a purely local, open‑source manager for multiple LLM‑backed services.
