Artemis – Interactive Learning Platform with AI‑assisted Feedback

What it is – Artemis is an open‑source, self‑hosted platform that lets universities run fully‑featured online courses. It supports many exercise types (programming, quizzes, UML modeling, text, file upload) and provides automatic grading, version control, CI, plagiarism detection and a suite of AI‑powered helpers.

Key AI features

  • Iris – an LLM‑based virtual tutor that can give hints and ask guiding questions.
  • Athena – AI that suggests feedback for text, modeling and programming submissions.
  • Hyperion – AI‑assisted authoring of new exercises, built on Spring AI.
  • Atlas agents – power the adaptive‑learning analytics and search. All AI services are optional and can be switched on via configuration.

The platform also offers adaptive learning paths, plagiarism checks (JPlag) and exam‑mode features, making it suitable for large university courses.

Typical use‑case

  1. An instructor creates a programming exercise, selects a template language, and defines test cases.
  2. Students submit code; Artemis builds it in isolated containers, runs the tests, and returns line‑by‑line feedback.
  3. If enabled, Athena suggests additional comments, and Iris can answer student questions in real time.
  4. The system records competencies; Atlas analytics adapt the learning path and provide dashboards for teachers.

Getting started – A single Docker‑Compose command pulls ready‑made images (amd64/arm64) and launches the full stack (server, client, database, build agent). After start‑up, open http://localhost:8080 and log in with the default admin credentials.
