Overview

Obsidian Copilot is an open‑source plugin that adds AI‑powered “agents” to the Obsidian note‑taking app. The agents can read and write notes, run tools, and keep a multi‑turn conversation, letting you use large language models (LLMs) for research, writing, and knowledge‑management directly inside your vault.

Core Features

Agent mode Multi‑step AI assistant that can inspect notes, create files, and use tools. Choose an Agent (opencode, Claude Code, or Codex). The agent runs in a chat window, maintains context across turns, and respects permissions you set.
Projects Separate workspaces with their own instructions, context, and chat history. Projects are tied to a chosen agent and keep state for ongoing tasks.
Skills Re‑usable capabilities shared across agents (e.g., Markdown handling, Canvas, CLI). Add a skill once; enable it for any installed agent.
Commands & Quick Ask Save repeatable prompts; invoke them with / or from the editor. Commands can be run in the Agent chat or exposed in the Command palette. Quick Ask lets you ask a question about a selected text and insert the answer.
Multiple sessions Run several Agent tabs simultaneously. With a Plus license you can mention other agents (@) for read‑only requests.
Model options Use Copilot‑hosted models, bring‑your‑own‑key (BYOK) providers, or local models. Settings → BYOK stores keys in Obsidian’s keychain. Claude Code and Codex use their own CLI logins.
Quick Chat Simple one‑off LLM conversation (no agent). Available on desktop and mobile.
Privacy controls Prompts go only to the model/provider you select; hosted services are optional. Free use sends data to the chosen provider; paid hosted features send data to Brevilabs with a transient processing policy.

Setup Flow

  1. Install the plugin from Obsidian’s Community Plugins page.
  2. Open Settings → Copilot → Basic → Agents.
  3. Choose a backend:
    • Download opencode (recommended) – can use Copilot‑hosted, BYOK, or local models.
    • Claude Code – auto‑detects local installation and uses its login.
    • Codex – connect via the @agentclientprotocol/codex‑acp adapter.
  4. Open the Agent chat via the ribbon icon or the command Open Copilot Agent Chat Window.
  5. (Optional) Create Projects, add Skills, or define Commands to customise the workflow.

Business Model

The plugin itself is open source and works without a paid plan if you provide your own model access. Paid plans (Copilot Plus) unlock:

  • Hosted opencode/Quick Chat models provided by Brevilabs.
  • Multi‑agent support and cloud‑backed tools.
  • Priority access to preview features. All paid features are optional; the core agent functionality remains free.

Who It’s For

  • Knowledge workers, researchers, writers, and anyone who already uses Obsidian and wants AI assistance without leaving the app.
  • Teams that need a consistent “assistant” that can read the vault, generate content, and keep a history of interactions.

Limitations

  • Full Agent mode runs only on desktop because it spawns local processes.
  • Mobile retains only Quick Chat, Commands, and Quick Ask.
  • Hosted models are proprietary; only the plugin front‑end is open source.
