LittleHorse Server: Business-as-Code Platform for Microservices, Workflows, and Agents
What it solves
LittleHorse is an orchestration engine designed to eliminate the complexity of managing distributed processes. It replaces the need for manually wiring microservices with RPC calls or message queues and removes the overhead of handling retries, timeouts, dead-letter queues, and distributed tracing across multiple services.
How it works
Using a "Business-as-Code" approach, developers write code that mirrors actual business processes. The system consists of a workflow engine that manages execution and task workers that handle the actual integrations with external systems and databases. It is built on Apache Kafka and Kafka Streams, allowing workflows to be triggered by Kafka events and emit state changes back to Kafka in real time.
Who it’s for
It is intended for developers and engineering teams building complex, event-driven architectures that require high-throughput, low-latency orchestration across agents, microservices, and external integrations.
Highlights
- Durable Execution: Provides a robust platform for sequencing and coordinating applications.
- Multi-language Support: Offers SDKs for Java, Python, Go, C#, and JavaScript.
- Kafka Integration: Deeply integrated with the Kafka ecosystem for event-driven triggers and updates.
- Business-as-Code: Allows the workflow specification to focus on business logic rather than infrastructure plumbing.
- Observability: Includes a dashboard for inspecting running workflow instances.
