The first GitHub Copilot, Codeium and ChatGPT Xcode Source Editor Extension

What it solves

Writing code in Xcode often requires switching between the editor and external AI tools. This extension brings AI assistance directly into the Xcode editor, offering code suggestions, an AI chat panel, and the ability to modify or generate code using natural language.

How it works

The extension runs as an Xcode Source Editor Extension. It uses a background service app to manage AI providers. For suggestions, it integrates GitHub Copilot and Codeium by installing their language servers. For chat and code modification, it uses OpenAI-compatible chat models. It requires folder access and Accessibility API permissions to track editor state, selected code, and cursor position. Users enable the extension in System Settings, grant permissions, and configure accounts in the host app.

Who it’s for

Xcode developers who have active subscriptions for GitHub Copilot, Codeium, or access to OpenAI-compatible chat models, and want to stay inside Xcode while leveraging AI for code completions, questions, and refactoring.

Highlights

  • Real-time code suggestions from GitHub Copilot or Codeium, with two presentation modes: near the text cursor or in a floating widget.
  • A chat panel that knows the selected code, file path, error/warning labels, and cursor location.
  • Prompt to Code lets you refactor or write code using natural language, with commands like Write or Edit Code and Accept Modification.
  • Custom commands allow you to reuse prompts with placeholders like {{selected_code}}, {{active_editor_language}}, and {{clipboard}}.
  • Global hotkey support and recommended key bindings for quick access.
