geezacoleman/OpenWeedLocator

An open-source, low-cost, image-based weed detection device for in-crop and fallow scenarios.

What it solves

OpenWeedLocator (OWL) provides a low-cost, open-source alternative for site-specific weed control. It reduces the need for blanket spraying by allowing farmers to target only the areas where weeds are detected, making precision agriculture accessible through off-the-shelf components.

How it works

The system uses a Raspberry Pi and a camera to monitor the ground. It employs green-detection algorithms to identify weeds and then triggers relay-controlled solenoids to activate spot spraying of herbicides. The hardware is constructed from 3D-printable parts and standard electronic components.

Who it’s for

This project is designed for farmers, agricultural researchers, and hobbyists who want to implement precision weed control without expensive proprietary equipment.

Highlights

  • Low-cost construction using Raspberry Pi and 3D-printed parts.
  • Supports various mounting options, from bicycles to large vehicles and robots.
  • Includes a standalone or networked dashboard for control.
  • Based on research published in Scientific Reports and Computers and Electronics in Agriculture.
