What it solves
It transforms basic, "dumb" robotic lawn mowers—which typically move in random patterns until they hit a boundary—into intelligent, GPS-guided machines. It eliminates the need for physical perimeter wires and allows for precise, map-aware autonomous mowing.
How it works
OpenMower replaces the original hardware "brain" of a compatible mower (such as the YardForce Classic 500) with a custom open-source hardware and software stack. The system uses ROS (Robot Operating System) for navigation, planning, and state management, combined with RTK GPS for precise positioning. It includes a dedicated operating system image, custom firmware for motor control and sensors, and a mobile/web app for user control.
