Scientific illustration for Codex and Claude Code: turn research papers into visual drafts using a curated image-and-prompt knowledge base, then reconstruct approved designs as editable PowerPoint or draw.io figures.

Sivia – AI‑powered scientific‑figure generator for Codex & Claude Code

What it is

  • A plugin for the AI coding assistants Codex and Claude Code that turns the method section of a research paper into an editable PowerPoint (PPTX) figure.
  • It reads the uploaded paper, selects a suitable layout from an extensible knowledge base of past scientific figures, generates a preview, and on approval delivers a native‑editable PPTX (or WPS) file.

Core capabilities

Feature What you can do
Editable PowerPoint output The produced PPTX contains real text boxes, shapes, arrows and separate image assets, so you can tweak labels, move modules, or swap experiment images directly in PowerPoint.
External knowledge base Sivia ships with a curated library of 10+ example cases across domains (3‑D reconstruction, agents, molecular modeling, world models, multimodal learning, etc.). You can also add your own lab‑specific figures to guide composition and visual style.
Iterative revision After a figure is approved you can ask for targeted changes (e.g., move a module, reroute arrows) while preserving the rest of the layout. Approved designs are stored locally and can be reused for future papers.
Draw.io export Existing scientific figures can be reconstructed and exported as editable draw.io diagrams.
Research‑grade RSI direction The project explores Recursive Self‑Improvement: using feedback from revisions to automatically refine drawing rules for later tasks.

Typical workflow

  1. Upload paper in Codex/Claude Code and ask Sivia for a scientific overview (high‑level method diagram).
  2. Review the generated image; if needed, request adjustments.
  3. Approve the design and ask for an editable PPTX.
  4. Open the PPTX in PowerPoint or WPS, edit text, reposition modules, replace images, etc.
  5. Optionally, make a targeted revision (e.g., move a block) and have Sivia update the PPTX while keeping the rest unchanged.

Installation

  • Codex: codex plugin marketplace add exsinger-hub/Sivia --ref main then codex plugin add sivia@sivia.
  • Claude Code: inside the editor run /plugin marketplace add exsinger-hub/Sivia followed by /plugin install sivia@sivia.
  • The repo includes Python and Node test suites; dependencies are listed in requirements.txt.

  • Third‑party components retain their original MIT licences.

Who might benefit?

  • Researchers & students preparing conference or thesis presentations who need quick, editable method diagrams.
  • Lab groups that want to maintain a consistent visual style across multiple papers by re‑using a shared knowledge base.
  • Tool developers building on top of Codex/Claude Code who need a ready‑made figure‑generation capability.
