A 2007 Nokia can't search Google anymore, so I gave it Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok. J2ME app for Nokia S40/S60 + tiny Go server.
What it solves
AIKON brings modern AI capabilities to legacy mobile devices, specifically Nokia Series 40 and Symbian S60 phones from the 2007 era. It bypasses the technical limitations of these old phones—such as outdated TLS 1.0 security protocols and lack of SNI—which prevent them from connecting to modern HTTPS APIs directly.
How it works
The project consists of a Java ME client app for the phone and a Go-based proxy server. The server acts as a bridge: it terminates the phone's legacy TLS 1.0 connection (using a private root CA) and forwards requests via modern HTTPS to AI providers like Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, and Grok. It also handles heavy lifting like speech-to-text for voice messages and image scaling for photos before sending them to the multimodal models.
Who it’s for
Retro-tech enthusiasts and owners of legacy Nokia devices who want to use modern LLMs on their original hardware.
Highlights
- Multi-Model Support: Switch between Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, and Grok per chat.
- Legacy Integration: Integrates with the phone's native calendar and to-do lists via AI-generated entries.
- Multimodal Capabilities: Supports photo uploads for visual analysis and voice dictation via server-side speech-to-text.
- Web Search: Enables the AI to perform web searches for current news, weather, and exchange rates without using the phone's browser.
- Optimized UI: Features a keypad-first interface with reading mode, light/dark themes, and support for 240x320 screens.
