dominikmartn/harp
Run many Claude Code and Codex agents side by side, in one sidebar that tells you which one needs you. An unofficial fork of Warp.
What is Harp?
Harp is a macOS terminal application that builds on the open‑source Warp terminal. It swaps Warp’s horizontal tab bar for a sidebar that is specially designed to show the status of long‑running AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex. The rest of the terminal works exactly like upstream Warp – you still get its fast rendering, cloud‑backed sessions, and built‑in AI features – but Harp adds a UI layer that makes it easier to keep track of multiple AI‑driven coding sessions.
Core Features
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Sidebar with agent states | Each row represents a Claude Code or Codex session. Icons show whether the agent is working, waiting for you, done, or running in the background. Unread activity is highlighted until you view it. |
| Group tabs | Tabs can be placed into named groups. When the optional tmux integration is enabled, the group name, order, and flags are stored in tmux, so the layout survives restarts and is shared with other tmux clients. |
| Limit‑rings footer | Small rings at the bottom display the 5‑hour and weekly usage limits for Claude and Codex. The numbers are read from a local JSON file you keep up‑to‑date; Harp never contacts any external service for them. |
| Phone‑friendly tmux integration | When a tmux session is started elsewhere (e.g., via SSH from a phone), it can adopt an existing Harp tab using the @warp_adopt tmux option. |
| Customizable settings | All extra UI bits are off by default. You enable them in ~/.harp/settings.toml; changes are reloaded automatically. |
| Same AI backend as Warp | Harp does not run its own servers. All AI calls (Claude Code, Codex, Warp Drive, session sharing) go to Warp’s official backend exactly as the upstream app does. |
Installation & Updating
- Binary release – Download the latest
Harp‑<version>.dmgfrom the GitHub Releases page and drag it into/Applications. Harp uses its own bundle identifier (com.dominikmartn.Harp) and stores settings under~/.harp, so it can coexist with a regular Warp install. - Automatic updates – Harp polls the GitHub releases page every 10 minutes. If a newer version is found, it downloads the DMG, verifies the signature, and prompts you to restart into the new build.
- Building from source – Requires macOS and the Rust toolchain (specified in
rust-toolchain.toml).
The./script/bootstrap # install toolchain & deps ./script/run # builds Harp.app and launches itscript/macos/runhelper signs the app with the first "Apple Development" identity it finds, falling back to an ad‑hoc signature if none is available.
Configuration (settings.toml)
[integrations.limit_rings]
enabled = true # show the usage‑limit rings
file = "~/.cache/limit-rings.json" # JSON source for the numbers
[integrations.tmux]
enabled = true # sync groups, order, flags with tmux
session_script = "" # optional external script for renaming/re‑grouping
Other toggles let you shrink the tab menu, restore the upstream CLI‑agent toolbar, and more. Changing the file triggers an automatic reload.
Who Might Use It?
- Developers who rely on AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Codex) and need a quick visual cue of which assistant is still processing, waiting for input, or finished.
- Power‑users of tmux who want their AI‑driven terminal tabs to persist across SSH sessions and be visible on mobile devices.
- Anyone who likes Warp’s performance but prefers a vertical layout that scales better when many AI sessions are open.
License
The code is released under the GNU AGPL‑v3 (the same as Warp), with a few UI crates (warpui, warpui_core) licensed under the MIT license. If you host a modified version for others over a network, the AGPL requires you to make the source available.
Quick Start Checklist
- Install the DMG or build from source.
- Open Harp, log in (same credentials as Warp).
- Enable the sidebar features you want in
~/.harp/settings.toml. - (Optional) Turn on the tmux integration to keep groups in sync.
- Open a Claude Code or Codex session – watch the sidebar update automatically.
Harp is an unofficial fork of Warp and is not affiliated with Warp’s company. All bug reports should be filed on this repository, not on Warp’s issue tracker.
