What it solves

Coder provides a self-hosted platform to manage cloud development environments (CDEs) and AI coding agents. It eliminates the friction of onboarding developers by automating the setup of IDEs and dependencies, while reducing infrastructure costs by automatically shutting down idle resources.

How it works

Workspaces are defined using Terraform, allowing them to be provisioned as EC2 VMs, Kubernetes Pods, or Docker Containers. These environments are connected via secure Wireguard tunnels. For AI capabilities, Coder includes a control plane that runs native AI coding agents and an AI Gateway to centralize authentication, auditing, and cost tracking for various LLM providers (such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google) without exposing API keys directly within the workspaces.
