What it solves

PokeTokenBar is a macOS menu bar application that gamifies the tracking of AI coding tokens. Instead of checking boring dashboards or browser tabs, users can visualize their token spend across multiple AI tools (like Claude Code, Cursor, and Gemini CLI) as a growing Pokémon companion that hatches, evolves, and fills a Pokédex based on actual usage.

How it works

The app reads token usage data directly from local logs and SQLite databases of various AI coding tools. It calculates today's spend, cost, and official usage limits (such as 5-hour or weekly blocks). This data is then mapped to a gamified system:

  • Hatching & Evolution: Token spend incubates eggs that hatch into Pokémon. Continued coding triggers evolutions through real evolution lines.
  • Rewards: Reaching usage limits earns "Rare Candy," which can be used to speed up growth.
  • Economy: Tokens used act as currency in an in-app shop to buy items like Shiny Charms (to increase rare hatch odds) or Mints (to re-roll natures).
  • Visualization: The companion can live in the menu bar or as a floating desktop pet.
