change-42-yhmm/quota-float

A lightweight Windows/macOS desktop widget that keeps your Codex quota visible from your local Codex Desktop session.

What it solves

Quota Float solves the problem of not knowing how much of your Codex, Claude, or API budget you have left. If you use these services for development or automation, you can hit a limit at an awkward moment. This widget puts that information in front of you all the time, so you can plan your work and avoid unexpected interruptions.

How it works

Quota Float runs on your Windows or macOS desktop as a small always-on-top widget. It reads the existing Codex Desktop login state on your machine and queries the official quota endpoints for that session. It does not guess your usage from token counts, and it never modifies your account settings or redeems reset credits.

The widget shows the current quota state for the provider you select. For subscription services like Codex or Claude, it displays the remaining 5-hour and weekly allowance along with the next reset time. For API services, it shows the current spend as an amount and currency. You can switch the displayed provider from the widget itself, or set it to rotate automatically. A small number in the Windows tray icon or an optional macOS menu-bar readout shows the same live metric without needing to open the widget.

When idle, the widget collapses into a tiny floating orb. Hover over it to expand the full view. It also handles edge cases gracefully: if the 5-hour window is unavailable it falls back to a clearly marked weekly view, and if the data is stale or the session is signed out, it shows that state instead of inventing numbers.

Who it’s for

This is for anyone who regularly uses Codex, Claude, OpenAI API, or Claude API and wants quick, always-visible access to their current usage limits. It is especially useful for developers, researchers, and heavy users who need to budget their API spend or avoid hitting subscription caps during focused work.

Highlights

  • Supports four local-first data sources: Codex/ChatGPT subscription quota, Claude subscription quota, OpenAI API costs, and Claude API costs.
  • Shows a subscription's 5-hour and weekly quota with its next reset time, or an API source's current spend as an amount and currency.
  • Switches the visible provider from the widget, and can rotate between connected sources automatically.
  • Uses provider-specific marks and presentation so Codex, Claude, OpenAI API, and Claude API data stay distinguishable.
  • Surfaces a compact live metric in the native status area: a small Windows tray-icon number, or an optional macOS menu-bar readout.
  • Uses clear quota states for healthy, caution, and critical remaining usage.
  • Collapses into a small floating orb when idle, then expands on hover.
  • Indicates whether quota is currently being consumed.
  • Includes persistent expansion, always-on-top controls, and localized tray actions.
  • Falls back to a clearly marked weekly-quota view when the 5-hour window is unavailable.
  • Checks for app updates automatically and supports signed in-app updates on Windows.
  • Shows reset credit count and available reset-credit expiration times when the quota service provides them.
  • Handles stale data, signed-out sessions, unavailable quota responses, and loading states without fabricating values.
