Find related notes and excerpts while writing. Your link building copilot displays relevant content in graph + list view. A local embedding model powers semantic search. Zero setup. No API key.

What it solves

Smart Connections helps Obsidian users with large vaults (hundreds or thousands of notes) avoid losing valuable insights in a sea of unlinked notes. It eliminates the need for manual organization, endless scrolling, and duplicated work by automatically surfacing semantically related notes.

How it works

The plugin uses local embeddings to index a user's vault. It then analyzes the semantic meaning of the current note to find and display related content. Users can interact with these connections through several views:

  • Connections View: Displays a list of notes semantically related to the current note, updating automatically as the user switches notes.
  • Lookup View: Allows for ad hoc semantic searches across the entire vault based on meaning rather than exact keyword matching.
  • Random Connection: Jumps to a random note that is strongly connected to the current one.

Who it’s for

Obsidian power-users, researchers, writers, and lifelong learners who capture ideas quickly but struggle to find and connect them later.

Highlights

  • Zero-setup: Ships with a local embedding model that works immediately upon installation.
  • Privacy-focused: Private and offline by default, keeping notes and embeddings on the local machine.
  • Curation Tools: Ability to pin or hide specific connection results to refine the experience.
  • Context Engineering: "Send to Smart Context" feature allows users to copy all content from related notes to use as context for external AI chats.
  • Cross-platform: Works on both desktop and mobile devices.
