36 video effects for Claude Code: drop in a talking-head clip, type /effects orbit. Face tracking, behind-your-head layers. By @vibha.in.progress

What this project is

claude-video-effects is a set of 45 pre-built video editing effects that run inside Claude Code (Anthropic's coding assistant). Instead of opening an editor, you drop a video into Claude's chat, type /effects plus an effect name, and Claude edits the video for you.

How it works

  1. Install — one command clones the project into Claude Code's skills folder (~/.claude/skills/effects on Mac/Linux, $HOME\.claude\skills\effects on Windows PowerShell). Restart Claude Code. You can also just ask Claude to install it for you.
  2. Use — drag a video into the chat, then type something like:
    • /effects orbit from 3 to 6 seconds
    • /effects spotlight when I say "kill the lights"
    • /effects comment-box at the end, typing CLAUDE
  3. First run — Claude spends about 2 minutes setting itself up. It needs ffmpeg and Python and installs them if missing.
  4. Rendering — Claude checks a few frames first, fixes anything that would cover your face, then outputs yourvideo_effects.mp4 next to your original. Your audio is untouched.
  5. Stacking — you can chain effects in one request, e.g. "Add locked-on from 6 to 10s, then orbit from 10 to 13s, then a reject stamp on 'no'."

The 45 effects

Each effect is a named visual treatment. Highlights from the table:

  • noise — reels pile up behind your head
  • lineup — numbered tiles fan out above your head
  • locked-on — brackets lock onto your face and the camera follows you
  • orbit — your reels circle your head
  • spotlight — darkens the room, keeps you lit
  • the-bill — your instructions print out like a receipt
  • todo — a checklist beside your head that ticks off as you talk
  • comment-box — an Instagram comment types itself and posts
  • tap — a Follow button flips to Following
  • reject-stamp — a big red stamp slams down
  • countdown-flip — a 3, 2, 1 flip clock above your head
  • glass-widgets — frosted glass widgets float around your head
  • tier-list — a tier list drops in and Claude flies into S tier
  • dot-reveal — your shot builds out of glowing dots, then snaps into focus
  • messages — iMessage notifications pop in one after another

Plus 30 more, covering magazine covers, carousels, LED signs, graphs, checklists, split screens, and similar social-media-style edits.

Bonus looks: /effects glitter-spotlight (golden rays and sparkles), cover-star look=editorial, and liquid-glass-graph look=bento.

Key behavior

Every effect follows your face. Anything that would cover your face gets placed behind your head instead.

Tips from the author

  • Vertical phone videos with you in frame work best.
  • Say timing in plain words ("when I say 'watch'") — Claude finds the exact second.
  • For effects that use your own reels (orbit, noise, phone-fan, profile-wall), give Claude a folder of screenshots.
  • Charts, counters, and headlines should use your real numbers — tell Claude what they are.
  • Default output is 1080p; you can ask for 4K (slower).

Honest limitations

  • These are starter versions — they won't match the author's polished reels, which also include sound design and hand-tuned timing.
  • Claude drafts the edit and you approve it before posting.
  • No sounds or captions are added — you add those in CapCut.
  • If something goes wrong, just describe what you see ("the word covers my face") and Claude fixes the plan and re-renders.

Technical credits

  • Face tracking: OpenCV YuNet (MIT license)
  • Person cut-out: MediaPipe Selfie Segmenter (Apache 2.0)
  • Fonts: Archivo Black, Instrument Serif, Space Mono, Inter, Anton, Montserrat (SIL OFL) and Permanent Marker (Apache 2.0)
  • Everything else: MIT (see LICENSE)

Bottom line

A plug-in that turns Claude Code into a one-command video editor for social-media-style effects — no timeline, no keyframes, just describe the effect and the timing in plain language.
