Local-first desktop music search, playlist, download, and playback app for Windows and Linux

iSpotify – Quick Overview

What it is – iSpotify is a free, open‑source desktop client that lets you search for music, download it as MP3 files, and play it locally on Windows or Linux. All operations happen on your computer; there is no central iSpotify account, server, analytics or telemetry.

Core capabilities

Feature What you get
Search & discovery Query songs and playlists (via YouTube) and browse results. You can select many items at once for batch download.
Download manager Queues MP3 downloads, shows speed/ETA, retries on failure and survives restarts.
Local library Your downloaded files are stored in the OS‑specific user data folder; you can sort, favourite and organise them into playlists for offline listening.
Playback Simple audio player with previous/next, seek, volume control and automatic pause when headphones are unplugged.
Privacy‑first Credentials (YouTube cookies, Discord token) are kept in the OS key‑ring; no telemetry leaves the machine.
Discord integration (optional) Publishes “Listening to iSpotify” status with cover art and track time when you link your Discord account.
Cross‑platform UI Built with PySide6 (Qt for Python) so the same interface runs on Windows and Linux.
Installation options Windows installer, portable exe, Debian/Ubuntu .deb, generic Linux portable binary, or a one‑line installer script that adds a signed repository and pulls in aria2 for fast resumable downloads.

How it works under the hood

  • yt‑dlp is used to search YouTube, resolve video URLs and extract the audio stream.
  • FFmpeg (or the bundled imageio‑ffmpeg) converts the stream to a high‑quality MP3.
  • Aria2 (installed by the Linux installer) handles the actual file download with resume support.
  • Keyring stores any cookies or Discord tokens securely in the OS vault.
  • The GUI is a thin Qt layer that orchestrates these tools and presents a familiar music‑player layout.

Getting started

  1. Download the appropriate package from the Download table (e.g., ISpotify-Setup-x86_64.exe for Windows or the Linux installer script).
  2. Run the installer or portable binary; the app creates a user‑data folder for your library.
  3. Open the app, search for a track, and click the download button. The file appears in your library once the background queue finishes.
  4. (Optional) In Settings → Discord, link your Discord account to broadcast what you’re listening to.

Who might like this – Music enthusiasts who want a self‑hosted alternative to Spotify’s streaming app, developers who prefer a Python‑based desktop tool, or anyone who wants to keep their listening data completely private.

Contributing – The project uses a standard Python virtual‑environment workflow (python -m venv .venv && pip install -r requirements.txt). Contributions are welcomed via pull requests; see CONTRIBUTING.md for guidelines.
