Overture Maps Data

What it solves

Overture Maps provides a standardized, open-source way to access massive global map datasets. Instead of forcing users to download a single, unwieldy file, it organizes map information into structured, cloud-native files that can be queried efficiently.

How it works

The project hosts map data in Parquet format across Amazon S3 and Microsoft Azure. The data is partitioned by "theme" (such as buildings, transportation, or places) to allow users to download only what they need. Each file includes standardized identifiers, spatial bounding boxes for faster searching, and geometry data encoded in a format compatible with modern mapping tools.

Who it’s for

This repository is designed for developers, data scientists, and GIS professionals who need reliable, large-scale geographic data for applications, analysis, or research. It is particularly useful for those who want to perform spatial queries directly in the cloud without downloading the entire global dataset.

Highlights

  • Cloud-native access via Amazon S3 and Microsoft Azure.
  • Partitioned by theme for targeted data retrieval.
  • Uses the Parquet format for efficient storage and querying.
  • Includes spatial bounding boxes for optimized performance.
  • Authoritative release tracking via a SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC).
