IKEA assembly, step by step: animated, manual-style 3D guides. Scan any paper manual with Together AI.

Bygga — IKEA assembly guides, generated in 3D

What it is: A web app (at usebygga.com) where you type the name or article number from an IKEA box — like BISSA or MALM — and get a full assembly guide rendered as 3D line drawings, similar to the paper manual but viewable from any angle, with each step read aloud.

How it works

Bygga doesn't use IKEA's PDF manuals. Instead, it pulls from IKEA's public product listings and generates every guide itself with a parametric plan generator. It currently covers 1,171 IKEA products (2,180 sizes across UK and US ranges), all drawn offline using a three.js line-art engine.

Voice control

The app is hands-free: it includes 1,476 pre-recorded audio clips (using a voice called Kokoro) that play without needing any API key. It also listens for the word "next" using Whisper (a speech-recognition system) running on Together AI, with echo cancellation so it can hear you while audio is playing.

AI assistance

For products Bygga doesn't have in its catalog, or for photo lookup and help, visitors can enter their own Together AI API key. The AI can:

  • Draft assembly guides for products not in the catalog
  • Look up products from photos
  • Answer questions with drawings of the exact panel, fitting, or step

Other features

  • Share cards drawn by the same 3D engine
  • A4 print view for paper guides
  • Offline support via a service worker, so opened guides work with no signal
  • Builds page showing all finished builds side by side at true scale

Running it locally

Clone, npm install, npm run dev, then open localhost:3000 and type BISSA to try it. You can jump to a specific step with a URL like /build/malm-3-drawers?step=12, print at /build/malm-3-drawers/print, and see finished builds at /builds. For AI features, copy .env.example to .env.local, set TOGETHER_API_KEY, and paste a mock key into the app's key box (only npm run dev accepts the mock key).

Testing

Two test suites are included: npm run voice:check replays 283 recorded listening runs, and npm run ikea:check tests every catalog row.

Roadmap

Planned improvements:

  • Teach the generator to handle odd shapes (three-cornered shelves, corner combinations, certain PAX widths)
  • Add more languages for voice
  • Test a manual scanner feature on real manuals
