What it solves

Family Ledger is a self-hosted financial management system designed for families who have assets scattered across multiple platforms (banks, brokers, Alipay, real estate, etc.) and want a global view of their net worth without sacrificing privacy to commercial apps. It solves the problem of tracking real annual returns (XIRR), distinguishing between earned income and investment gains, and identifying hidden industry risks by "penetrating" through mutual fund holdings to see the actual underlying assets.

How it works

Instead of daily transaction logging, the project uses a monthly snapshot approach. Users open a period, enter their end-of-month balances, and close the period to generate reports. It integrates AI to reduce manual entry: visual LLMs can recognize holdings from screenshots of brokerage accounts, and AI provides diagnostic interpretations of asset allocation and risk exposure based on calculated engineering data.
