Desktop app for designing parametric 3D models in CadQuery together with the coding agent of your choice
What it solves
Traditional CAD software has a steep learning curve. SOMA lets you describe a part in plain language to a coding agent, which writes the model as Python code using CadQuery. The app builds and shows the result immediately, so you can inspect, measure, and request changes without knowing CAD or programming. It's "vibe coding" for physical objects.
How it works
You start a new model in SOMA, then launch a CLI agent (like Claude Code, OpenCode, or Codex) from the built-in terminal. You tell the agent what you need—for example, a Raspberry Pi case with vents. The agent edits a Python script using CadQuery, and SOMA rebuilds the 3D view on every change. You can click parts, measure distances, or draw on the view to send feedback to the agent. The agent also gets a command-line tool (soma build, soma analyze, soma render) and a set of rules in AGENTS.md. All work is saved in a single .soma file that contains code, results, and history. SOMA itself does not include an agent—it works with any CLI agent you already have installed.
Who it’s for
Makers, hobbyists, and engineers who need custom brackets, cases, or mounts but don't want to spend hours learning a CAD program. It's also useful for tinkerers who prefer to iterate by conversation rather than by dragging geometry. Users should be comfortable installing a CLI agent and following basic instructions.
Highlights
- Models are written as Python code with CadQuery, rebuilt live on every change
- One
.somafile holds code, result, and history, like a CAD file - Point-and-click feedback: measure, section, explode, and sketch directly on the 3D view
- Parameter panel to adjust dimensions without touching code
- Timeline history lets you preview and restore any previous state
- Built-in parts (screws, nuts, washers, heat-set inserts) and STEP import
- Agent skills for 3D printing, CNC, laser cutting, sheet metal, and tolerances
- Analysis tools for overhangs, wall thickness, and FEM strength (using CalculiX)
- Export to STEP, STL, 3MF, DXF, and PDF technical drawings
- Works with your own folder (e.g., a Git repo) and with desktop agent apps like Claude Desktop or the Codex app
