CatVinci-Studio/Textus

The next-generation Markdown editor, with an AI writing assistant. Free and open source for macOS, Windows and Linux.

Textus – AI‑enhanced Markdown editor

What it is – Textus is an open‑source, cross‑platform Markdown editor that adds AI‑powered writing assistance. It lets you write in a live‑preview environment and, when you pause, suggests the next words, flags grammar, and can perform edits, rewrites, translations, tone changes, etc.

Key features

  • Real‑time WYSIWYG Markdown rendering (including math, tables, Mermaid diagrams).
  • Four writing modes: Zen, Typewriter, Split‑view, and Source‑code.
  • Export to PDF, Word, HTML and other formats.
  • AI assistant (“Textus AI”) that works with any OpenAI‑compatible LLM: OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, xAI, Mistral, Groq, OpenRouter, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, Ollama, etc.
  • AI suggestions appear inline (grey continuation) and can be accepted with Tab; more complex edits are offered as proposals with explanations.
  • The assistant learns your style and remembers characters/places you define.
  • No mandatory account: you provide your own API key or run a local model via Ollama; all requests go directly from your device to the chosen provider.
  • Fully offline for the editor itself; AI features need an external service unless you use a local model.
  • Plain‑text Markdown files are saved wherever you like; no telemetry, ads, or cloud lock‑in.

Supported platforms

  • macOS (Apple Silicon & Intel) – .dmg
  • Windows (x64) – .exe
  • Linux (x64) – AppImage, .deb, .rpm
  • Homebrew cask and Arch Linux repository are provided.
  • iPhone/iPad support is announced for the future.

Installation – Download binaries from the GitHub releases page, install via Homebrew (brew install --cask catvinci-studio/tap/textus) or Arch repo script, then run the app.

Privacy & licensing

  • MIT‑licensed, source code publicly available for audit.
  • API keys and sign‑ins are stored only locally; AI traffic never passes through the Textus servers.
  • Users retain full ownership of their Markdown files.

Community & contribution

  • Discord, QQ, and WeChat groups for support.
  • Roadmap, contribution guide, and agent‑coding guidelines are in the repo.
  • Open issues and pull requests are welcomed.

Bottom line – Textus combines a polished Markdown authoring experience with flexible, plug‑in AI assistance, while keeping data local and the software free and open source.
