Autumn1337/better-statusline

A status line for Claude Code: the session's figures as dot-matrix rings, and the music you are playing beside them

What it solves

This project provides a visual, real-time dashboard for Claude Code, replacing or augmenting the standard command-line interface with a dynamic status bar. It helps users track session metrics, API usage, and media playback directly within their terminal.

How it works

The tool uses Claude Code's function hooks to render a "band" above your prompt. It draws visual elements—such as rings for context usage, cache status, and rate limits—using braille-cell dot-matrix patterns. It also integrates with macOS media players (Spotify or Apple Music) to display a music card that extracts colors from album covers to style its interface.

Who it’s for

It is designed for developers who use Claude Code on macOS and want a highly visual, aesthetic, and informative terminal environment. It is particularly useful for those who want to monitor their token usage, session progress, and media controls without switching windows.

Highlights

  • Visual Status Rings: Displays context window fullness, cache expiration, and 5-hour/weekly usage limits.
  • Session Tracking: Shows git branch info, file changes, and per-turn spend bars.
  • Integrated Media Controls: Displays a music card with playback controls and album art extraction.
  • Responsive UI: Automatically adapts to light/dark themes and can be folded into a single row using the /fold command.
  • Customizable: Offers options for icon sets (Nerd Fonts vs. Unicode) and motion settings.
