Spec for Agent Memory Repo
What it solves
Agent Memory Repo provides a standardized way for AI agents to maintain persistent, long-term memory across different sessions. It prevents agents from forgetting user preferences, project context, and technical findings, eliminating the need for users to repeat instructions or context in every new chat.
How it works
The system uses a Git-based repository as a "memory store." The agent follows a continuous loop: it clones the memory repo, searches (greps) for relevant information, updates entries as it learns new facts, and pushes changes back to the repo.
Key components include:
- MEMORY.md: A central entry point and index that the agent loads first to navigate the memory network.
- Wiki-style Linking: Memories are stored in Markdown files and linked using
[[path]]syntax, allowing agents to navigate complex information like a wiki. - Metadata: Entries include sources (links to sessions) and timestamps to track when and where information was learned.
- Dreaming: A background process where a dedicated agent periodically cleans up duplicates, merges entries, and identifies patterns across sessions.
Who it’s for
- Individual Users: People who want their AI agents to remember personal preferences and project-specific context.
- Agent Swarms: Multiple agents working in parallel who need to share real-time findings and coordinate tasks.
- Teams: Organizations that want to share a collective knowledge base of customers, tools, and processes across all team members' agents.
Highlights
- Git-backed Persistence: Uses standard version control to handle history, permissions, and conflict resolution.
- Cros-session Continuity: Enables agents to retrieve specific technical details (like SQL queries) from previous sessions.
- Composability: Allows multiple memory repos (e.g., from different users) to be cloned into a single session for collaborative work.
- Automated Maintenance: Includes a "Dreaming" mechanism for cleaning and organizing memory entries.
