FinRL®-Meta: Dynamic datasets and market environments for FinRL.

What it solves

FinRL-Meta addresses the difficulty of developing and evaluating financial trading agents by providing a standardized market environment and benchmark layer. It aims to reduce the "simulation-reality gap" where historical backtesting fails to predict actual performance, and lowers the data pre-processing burden for quantitative researchers.

How it works

The project uses a three-layer architecture to separate concerns:

  1. Data Layer: Implements a DataOps pipeline to automate the accessing, cleaning, and feature extraction of financial data from various sources (e.g., Yahoo Finance, Binance, Alpaca).
  2. Environment Layer: Creates virtual market environments where agents can be tested and compared fairly using the same datasets.
  3. Agent Layer: A plug-and-play interface that allows researchers to integrate various Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) libraries.

It follows a "Training-Testing-Trading" pipeline to prevent information leakage by strictly separating the time periods used for training, hyperparameter tuning, and live trading.

Who it’s for

It is designed for quantitative researchers and developers building data-driven financial reinforcement learning agents who need reliable benchmarks and automated data pipelines.

Highlights

  • Plug-and-Play Compatibility: Supports major DRL libraries including ElegantRL, Stable-Baselines3, and RLlib.
  • Extensive Data Integration: Built-in support for numerous data sources across US and Chinese securities and cryptocurrencies.
  • Automated DataOps: Streamlines the pipeline from raw OHLCV data to processed technical indicators (e.g., MACD, RSI).
  • Sim-to-Real Focus: Specifically designed to bridge the gap between historical simulation and real-market execution.
