Hermes IDE – A Multi‑Agent Coding Workspace

One console for every coding agent – Hermes IDE lets you run Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, and any other CLI‑based coding assistant side‑by‑side, each in its own real terminal and Git worktree.

What it is

  • Desktop application (macOS, Windows, Linux) built with Tauri 2, a Rust‑backed webview, and a React + TypeScript front‑end.
  • The app is vendor‑neutral: it does not embed any AI model itself; it simply launches the agents you already have installed and authenticated.
  • Each agent runs in a separate terminal and on a dedicated Git branch/worktree, so their file changes never clash.

Core workflow

  1. Create a task – press ⌘N (or Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows/Linux). You type a short description; Hermes creates a new hermes/<agent‑name> branch and worktree and starts the chosen agent with that prompt.
  2. Work – the agent interacts in its own terminal exactly as it would in a normal shell. Hermes watches the Git status and the agent’s output.
  3. Inbox – if the agent needs a decision, it appears in an inbox; ⌘I jumps to the longest‑waiting session.
  4. Review Desk – press ⌘G to open a panel that shows the agent’s changes turn‑by‑turn, with diff view, risk flags and the ability to comment back to the agent.
  5. Land – once satisfied, click Land to commit, open a PR, or merge locally. The operation can be undone.

Highlighted features

Feature What you get
Multiple agents, real terminals Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity, Gemini, Copilot CLI, OpenCode, Aider, Kiro, custom shells – each in its own pane.
Per‑agent authentication Agents use the credentials you already set up (API keys, CLI log‑ins). Hermes never stores tokens for you.
Git worktree isolation Every task lives on its own branch/worktree, with instant dependency install and independent ports.
Inbox & status icons Sessions show working, needs‑approval, asked‑you, done, error, idle; the inbox counts blocked agents.
Review Desk Diff per turn or per file, inline comments, risk flags, and one‑click commit/PR/merge with undo.
Agent‑view for Claude (optional) Structured chat UI with thinking blocks, tool‑call cards, image paste, and persistent conversation history.
Project scanning & context injection Automatic detection of languages/frameworks; a context file is passed to the agent within a configurable token budget.
Prompt library Access the open‑source Hodios collection (10k+ prompts) or your own templates via ⌘J.
Multi‑project sessions Attach several repositories; their scanned context is combined for the agent.
Ghost‑text suggestions Command‑history completions appear as you type in shells that lack their own suggestions.
System notifications & spend tracking Get a notification when an agent is blocked or finished; see token usage or reported cost per session.
Stuck‑detection If an Agent‑view session ignores a stop request, Hermes offers a forced stop while preserving the transcript.
Split panes & GPU‑accelerated terminal Resize panes, split horizontally/vertically; terminals render via WebGL when available.
Plugin API Extend Hermes with custom agents or UI components (see docs/plugin‑api‑v2.md).

Getting started

  1. Download the installer for your OS from https://hermes-ide.com/download (or the GitHub releases page).
  2. Run the app, go through the three‑step wizard to point Hermes at the CLI tools you have and sign in each one.
  3. Pick a Git repository and start your first task with ⌘N.

All shortcuts are listed in docs/shortcuts.md.

Building from source

  • Prerequisites: Node 20+, Rust 2021 (pinned in rust-toolchain.toml), and Tauri system dependencies.
  • Typical commands:
    git clone https://github.com/hermes-hq/hermes-ide.git
    cd hermes-ide
    npm ci
npm run tauri dev # dev server with hot‑reload
npm run tauri build # production binaries

  • Tests: npx tsc --noEmit, npm run test, and cargo test in src‑tauri.

License & community

  • Business Source License 1.1 – free for non‑production use; after three years each release re‑licenses to Apache 2.0.
  • Community: Discord server, GitHub Discussions, and a sponsor program for individuals and companies.

Who might benefit?

  • Developers who juggle multiple AI coding assistants and want a safe, Git‑aware environment.
  • Teams that need to compare outputs from different vendors without manual copy‑pasting.
  • Anyone who wants a terminal‑first, vendor‑neutral IDE that keeps agents alive across app restarts.

In short: Hermes IDE is a practical desktop workspace that orchestrates many code‑generation agents, isolates their work with Git worktrees, and gives you fine‑grained review and merge tools—all without locking you into a single AI provider.
