OpenAI to Acquire Promptfoo
OpenAI is acquiring Promptfoo, an AI security platform specializing in vulnerability identification and remediation during the development of AI systems. This acquisition allows OpenAI to integrate Promptfoo's evaluation and red-teaming technology directly into OpenAI Frontier, the platform for building and operating AI coworkers.
Enterprise AI Security and Compliance
As enterprises deploy AI coworkers into real-world workflows, systematic testing, security, and compliance become foundational requirements. Organizations require tools to test agent behavior, detect risks prior to deployment, and maintain records for oversight, and governance, and accountability.
Integration into OpenAI Frontier
OpenAI will incorporate Promptfoo's capabilities into the Frontier platform to provide native security and safety testing. This integration focuses on three primary areas:
Native Security and Safety Testing
Automated security testing and red-teaming will be built directly into the platform. This enables enterprises to identify and remediate risks such as:
- Prompt injections
- Jailbreaks
- Data leaks
- Tool misuse
- Out-of-policy agent behaviors
Integrated Development Workflows
Security and evaluation will be deeply integrated into the development workflows within Frontier. This allows developers to identify, investigate, and remediate agent risks earlier in the development cycle.
Oversight and Accountability
Frontier will provide integrated reporting and traceability. These features help organizations document their testing processes, monitor changes over time, and meet governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) expectations for AI.
Open Source and Team Expertise
Promptfoo is led by Ian Webster and Michael D’Angelo and is trusted by over 25 percent of Fortune 500 companies. The acquisition includes a widely used open-source CLI and library for evaluating and red-teaming LLM applications. OpenAI has stated that they will continue building the open-source project while advancing the integrated enterprise capabilities within Frontier.
Executive Perspectives
"Promptfoo brings deep engineering expertise in evaluating, securing, and testing AI systems at enterprise scale. Their work helps businesses deploy secure and reliable AI applications, and we’re excited to bring these capabilities directly into Frontier."
— Srinivas Narayanan, CTO of B2B Applications, OpenAI
"We started Promptfoo because developers needed a practical way to secure AI systems. As AI agents become more connected to real data and systems, securing and validating them is more challenging and important than ever. Joining OpenAI lets us accelerate this work, bringing stronger security, safety, and governance capabilities to the teams building real-world AI systems."
— Ian Webster, Co-founder and CEO, Promptfoo
