DALL·E Outpainting Feature Release

OpenAI has introduced Outpainting, a feature for DALL·E that enables users to extend an image beyond its original borders. This capability allows for the creation of large-scale images in any aspect ratio by adding new visual elements based on natural language descriptions.

Image Extension and Visual Consistency

Outpainting allows users to continue a story or add visual elements to an image while maintaining the style and context of the original piece. The system ensures visual continuity by accounting for existing elements within the image, including:

• Shadows: Maintaining consistent lighting and shadow placement.
• Reflections: Extending existing reflections into the new areas of the image.
• Textures: Preserving the surface details and patterns of the original work.

Comparison with Inpainting

Outpainting complements DALL·E's existing Edit feature, which provides "Inpainting" capabilities. While Inpainting allows for changes to be made within a generated or uploaded image, Outpainting focuses on extending the original image outward to expand the canvas.

Availability and User Base

Outpainting is available to all DALL·E users on desktop via labs.openai.com. At the time of the announcement, OpenAI stated that more than one million people were using DALL·E as a creative tool for generating artwork from natural language descriptions.
