OpenAI and U.S. National Laboratories Partnership

OpenAI has signed an agreement with the U.S. National Laboratories to provide its latest reasoning models to accelerate scientific research and national security initiatives. This partnership aims to leverage advanced AI to drive breakthroughs in healthcare, energy, and security, ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits humanity through government collaboration.

Deployment on the Venado Supercomputer

OpenAI, in collaboration with Microsoft, will deploy the o1 model (or another o-series model) on Venado, an NVIDIA supercomputer located at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This deployment makes the model a shared resource for researchers from three key institutions:

  • Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
  • Sandia National Laboratories

Venado was specifically designed to advance scientific breakthroughs in fields such as astrophysics, renewable energy, and materials science.

Key Scientific and Security Applications

Advanced AI reasoning models will be used to address critical challenges across several domains:

  • Basic Science and Technology: Accelerating the fundamental science that supports U.S. global technological leadership.
  • Healthcare: Identifying new methods for treating and preventing diseases.
  • CBRN and National Security: Improving the detection of natural and man-made threats, including biological and cyber threats, before they emerge.
  • Energy Infrastructure: Revolutionizing the nation's energy infrastructure and unlocking the full potential of natural resources to achieve U.S. energy leadership.
  • Cybersecurity: Enhancing the protection of the American power grid and overall cybersecurity.
  • Fundamental Physics: Deepening the understanding of forces governing the universe, ranging from high-energy physics to fundamental mathematics.

Nuclear Security and Safety Frameworks

The partnership specifically supports the National Labs' program in nuclear security, which focuses on securing nuclear materials and weapons worldwide and reducing the risk of nuclear war. Due to the importance of this work, OpenAI will implement a careful and selective review of use cases and provide consultations on AI safety via OpenAI researchers who hold security clearances.

This collaboration builds on a previous engagement with Los Alamos National Laboratory, where OpenAI worked with wet labs to assess the risks of advanced models in creating bioweapons, such as human-designed pandemics. The partnership expects to lead to broader safety collaborations regarding chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) risks.

Strategic Infrastructure Partnership with Microsoft

Microsoft serves as OpenAI's preferred partner for AI compute infrastructure. Through this collaboration, OpenAI and Microsoft will work together to support the U.S. government's mission and develop future projects that align with the goal of ensuring AGI benefits all of humanity.
