Guide to Disabling Intrusive AI in Common Software

Users can reduce the presence of generative AI in their digital environments by utilizing specific system settings, browser flags, and alternative software. As AI features are increasingly integrated into core operating systems and productivity suites, the process for removal often requires navigating deep menu structures or using third-party debloating tools.

Operating System AI Removal

Windows 11 and Copilot

Windows 11 integrates Copilot as both a system-level agent and an Office 365 component. To remove it, users can right-click the Copilot entry in the Start menu and select Uninstall. If this option is unavailable, it can be found under Start > Settings > Apps.

For builds where Copilot is deeply integrated into the OS, the following steps apply:

  • Taskbar: Navigate to Start > Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and toggle Copilot off.
  • File Explorer: Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & Security > Click to Do to remove AI features.
  • Notepad: Open Notepad settings and toggle off AI features or the Writing Tools section.
  • General System: Disable "Text and image generation" in settings to affect Photos, Snipping Tool, and Xbox.

Advanced users may use third-party tools like O&O ShutUp 10 or Win11Debloat for more thorough removal.

Apple Intelligence and Siri

Apple Intelligence is available on iPhone 16 and newer Macs and iPads. It can be disabled via Settings (iOS) / System Settings (macOS) > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Turn Off Apple Intelligence.

To prevent Siri from learning from specific applications even when Apple Intelligence is off:

  • macOS: Go to System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > About Siri, Dictation & Privacy and disable specific apps.
  • iOS: Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Apps and disable "Learn from this App."

Browser-Embedded AI and Search

Google Chrome and AI Nano

Chrome users can disable AI features by entering chrome://flags in the address bar and searching for GLIC (Google live in Chrome) and Gemini. Setting these flags to "disabled" removes the associated AI functionality.

Microsoft Edge

Edge users can disable Copilot and AI features through two primary methods:

  1. Flags: Enter edge://flags and search for "AI" or "Copilot" to disable relevant flags.
  2. Settings: Navigate to Appearance > Copilot and sidebar. Turn off the sidebar, "Personalize my top sites in customize sidebar," and "Allow sidebar apps to show notifications." Under App specific settings, disable the "Show Copilot button on the toolbar" and the "Show sidebar button" toggle.
  3. Writing Tools: Under Languages, disable "Use Copilot for writing on the web."

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox version 148 and later includes a native option to Block AI Enhancements under Settings > AI Controls. Additionally, users can install extensions to remove AI-generated content from Google search results.

DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo provides a dedicated no-AI search experience at noai.duckduckgo.com. Users can set this as their default search engine across any browser.

Productivity and Communication Apps

Adobe Acrobat and Reader

  • Acrobat (Windows): Menu > Preferences > Generative AI (uncheck the box and save).
  • Acrobat (macOS): View > Preferences > Generative AI (uncheck the box and save).
  • Adobe Reader: Select Disable new Acrobat Reader from the top menu and restart the application.

Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, etc.)

In Gmail, navigate to Settings (gear icon) > See all settings > General tab. Scroll to Google Workspace smart features and select Manage Workspace smart feature settings. Toggle off both "Smart features in Google Workspace" and "Smart features in other Google products." Additionally, uncheck "Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet."

WhatsApp

  • Suggested Replies: Settings > Chats > Suggestions & smart replies > toggle off Suggested replies and AI Sticker suggestions.
  • Message Summaries: Settings > Notifications > AI message summaries (toggle off).

Zoom

Users must sign in to Zoom.com, navigate to My Account > Settings > Zoom AI, and disable all options. Users should also check the My Notes tab to disable "Allow participants to transcribe meetings with My Notes."

Slack

AI feature management is handled at the workspace owner and administrator level via Slack's administrative settings.

Community Insights and Alternatives

Discussion among users suggests that disabling AI is becoming increasingly difficult as developers may not provide fallback states for non-AI features. For example, some users noted that certain Apple CarPlay functions may rely on Siri even for basic tasks.

To avoid AI integration entirely, users have recommended several alternatives:

  • Browsers: LibreWolf and Waterfox are cited as privacy-focused browsers that remove AI features by default.
  • OS: Switching to Linux is suggested as a long-term solution to avoid forced LLM integration in Windows and macOS.
  • Software: Using LibreOffice instead of Microsoft Office, VSCodium instead of VSCode, and Codeberg instead of GitHub.
  • Tools: For macOS users, Wairy is a tool to audit and revoke AI permissions on the system.
